Effective pipe freezing can keep the pipes from leaking, ensuring their good health
Pipe Freezing
Pipe freezing is a
technique is that is used to improve and repair the condition of the pipelines
from leakage and other problems. Through the pipe-freezing process, the
exterior of the pipe is cooled down for a certain period to let the fluid
completely solidify. The frozen pipe separates a section of the pipe, so the
technicians can perform their tasks smoothly.
Pipe freezing can be a
very convenient procedure when there is no option available to repair the
pipes, especially when they are filled with liquids. Pipe freezing services can do their job in remote areas because an individual
pipeline can get isolated using the pipe-freezing technique. With this
technique, you won’t have to shut the entire pipeline, but only the area that
needs to be repaired. Pipe freezing is very effective form small diameter
pipes, but if you want to freeze much wider pipes, let’s say 150mm or bigger,
you may need some additional equipment to carry on the procedure.
Pipe freezing: Cautions
To perform the method,
the temperature of the pipeline must be bought down to its freezing point of
the fluid it contains. So, you will need some type of refrigerant and have to handle
that accordingly or you will end up damaging the pipe even more.
The most popular method
to do this is to apply liquid nitrogen into the pipeline and wait for the
liquid to freeze. Again it should be reminded that you have to choose the
refrigerant according to the liquid the pipeline contains and the material of
the pipeline itself. So, it is quite evident that the technicians will use
different coolers to freeze different types of liquid without freezing the
exterior of the pipe too much. If the coolant is strong enough to freeze the
pipeline itself or freeze the materials of the pipe to its breaking point, you
will have to deal with bigger problems.
After the cooling starts
to become effective, the contained liquid will start to freeze and will create
an ice plug. This ice plug restricts the rest of the fluid in the pipe from
flowing, which provides the technicians with a window of opportunity to make
the repair or certain modifications.
Pipe Freezing: Advantages
- Pipe freezing creates a temporary
plug that prevents the liquid from flowing to do the necessary
modifications
- The pipe-freezing method is
considered to be quite convenient as it doesn’t require drainage
- There’s no need for the whole
system to shut down
- Pipe freezing is not only effective
but one of the fastest method for treating pipe leakage
- One of the subtlest advantages of
pipe freezing is that it doesn’t harm the pipeline during work on progress
Pipe freezing: Capabilities
- Pipe freezing technology is best
suited for carbon-based steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, and cast
iron
- The method works perfectly with a
pipe of 48” or lower diameter
- Pipe freezing can be done on
various water-based liquids
- The maximum operating pressure is
5000PSI
Pipe Freezing: Applications
- Installing the valves
- Replacing the pipes
- Isolating certain equipment
- Terminating pipe branches
- Pipe diversion
- Abandoning faulty pipes
- Installing meters
Pipe freezing: Pipe contents
- Water
- Acid
- Paints
- Alcohol
- Oil
- Coolants
Inserting the valves
Valve insertion is considered one of the modern
engineering technologies where a valve is inserted directly into a pipeline
without much human effort. This is also considered as one of the safest and
convenient methods with no system interruptions.
